Once the Republic of the 7 united Netherlands became independent from Spain, the castle became a prison. The building served this purpose for centuries. The prison's existence ended in 2008. Today, the complex hosts a variety of organizations and companies such as ateliers, the library, bars and restaurants and a hostel.
