Kuressaare linnus

Gaining control over the island and spreading Christianity were probably the main reasons to construct the castle. The castle overlooks the island of Saaremaa and the bay of Riga; hereby explaining its strategic situation. The castle was transformed into a fortress but would lose its strategic importance throughout the years. Looking back, the castle faced several sieges by the Swedes, the Russian empire Empire, the Nazis, and the Soviets. Today, visits can explore the castle but also enjoy a variety of activities.
